Veterans Legislative Update | 17 Feb '20

Greetings,

Headlines:

·         WELL DONE to Chairman Pinsky and Members of the Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee for their FAVORABLE REPORT on the SB 294 – the Veterans Education Protection Act! This important legislation will help protect our Veterans, Service members, and their Families from predatory practices by for-profit educational businesses! We are also looking for success for Delegate Pat Young’s HB 593 which is pending a vote by the House Appropriations Committee.

·         A similar effort to is underway in Oregon. Last week their Senate Education Committee reported favorably on SB 1544 to close the 90|10 loophole!

·         Also, WELL DONE to Senator Bryan Simonaire for introducing so many important Veterans bills that have cleared the Senate and are now pending action in the House, including SB 25, SB 84, SB 86, SB 90, SB 128 (Pets for Vets), SB 142 (Healing Hunting and Fishing Fund), and SB 324 (Veterans Mental Health First Aid).

·         Check out the latest Free State Veterans blog for a breakdown on the Healing Hunting and Fishing Fund, including some of the great Maryland nonprofits that might benefit!

·         Next Monday (2/24), the House Rules Committee will hold hearings on Delegate Chang’s HB 32 “Welcome Home Korean War Veterans Day”, Delegate Rosenberg’s HB 119 “Commission on African American Patriots in the American Revolutionary War”, and Delegate Bagnall’s HJ 4 “Commission to Establish a Maryland Women Veterans Memorial”. Important bills, worthy of Maryland Military Coalition and American Legion Department of Maryland support!

·         Also, next Thursday (2/27), Senator Patterson’s SB 20 “Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day” will have its hearing before the Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee.

·         It would be great to appropriately honor our Tuskegee Airmen and Korean War Veterans while some of them are still alive!

·         Don’t miss the 2nd Annual Women Veterans Day on Wednesday, March 4th, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It’s happening in the House of Delegates, Room 180.

·         Due to popular demand, I will continue this weekly email update through the end of the session.
