Participating in a career fair calls for more work than perceived on deciding to partake of one.   However, there is a lot of information that tells me the actions I should take to properly prepare myself to be effective at the career fair.

I’ve done my research on the companies I really wanted to consider, prepared my 30 second pitch, focused to the specific company’s recruiter or manager I talked with, registered at the entrance to the fair, and provided a copy of my resume if I didn’t register online ahead of time.  I have also given each representative a copy of my focused resume, gotten a business card from the individual, and picked up any materials available at the booth.   I also stopped by several other employer booths as a result of information I picked up at the fair in talking to other job seekers while we were standing in lines.

Now I’m back home, it’s evening and I have options on how I’m spending my time.  Do I:

1.       Craft a revised resume, based on information I picked up in talking with the company representative, and send to the representative, ending the email with a closing statement that I will call on (and name the  day and date) to follow up on the conversation we had at the fair?

2.       In the follow up conversation propose a meeting with whoever would be appropriate for a meeting to discuss some (ideas, thoughts, and questions) I have developed.

Simple yes, and not as difficult or challenging as I might expect.  And it is easy to get into the habit.  The questions, suggestions, or ideas can be developed from any of the conversation or literature obtained, including the company’s annual report.

What does all of this effort do?  It shows clear and definite interest in the organization, yet does not commit beyond the next step.  How many job seekers do you know do this follow up?  These two steps are also totally professional in nature.

Good hunting.
